DT: “I recall a news story; it was actually some time ago now - it involved someone being set alight… murdered in a churchyard … there was this TV documentary about the case… Again, it’s a long while back, and I can’t recall all the details, but it’s been a story that has stayed with me… A horrible recurring scene that’s frequently played out to me, in my sleep… And then, bizarrely, many years later… I’m having this conversation with someone in a very particular setting [don’t worry, it’s a long and complicated story] and the conversation starts taking this incredibly eerie turn… I’m listening to an account of ‘dark forces’, emanating from the earth… all-night vigils, lying on top of graves, contemplating the absolute pits of hatred… And there’s this colossal feeling-sensation of a pure, consuming evil… “People must be punished, people must suffer, people must see it all and feel it all, people must die… horribly - the terror, the horror will be absolute; people will feel that certainty, that their time is up… time is up…Death as visitation - ‘I’m going to kill you’ “- kind of thing… And I’m feeling all of this; re-experiencing the death scene from the news story, like a vivid flashback… as I’m intently listening… Quite horrendous… And now - cut to the present: suddenly the same scene has been revisiting me recently… But now it’s connected to the threat of terrorism… And I’m wondering where the connection can be made… The absolutism of intention, maybe… People can FEEL that strongly and connect that wholly with an idea and purpose, based on some extreme emotional calling… And it’s all about hatred and it’s all death… A worship of these things… And I suppose I’m exploring these ‘feelings’ in the present drawings and paintings… The absolute threat… The absolute dark promise… “You will suffer”… it is very real.”
